Mayor's Proclamation for Day of Remembrance

Mayor Tom Leners officially declared Thursday, January 22, 2026 as a Day of Remembrance in honor of SSG William (Nate) Howard and SSG Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar.  On December 13, 2025, these brave soldiers of the Army National Guard's 1-113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division were killed in action in Palmyra, Syria, while deployed in service to our nation.   

On January 22, 2026, the flags of the United States of America and the State of Iowa shall be flown at half-staff at all City of Winterset facilities; and citizens, businesses, civic organizations, and community institutions are respectfully encouraged to do the same as a visible sign of mourning, gratitude, and remembrance.
